Alternatively you can use; lsof
The nice thing this gives you is process owner and pid.
So as root, looking for processes listing;
# lsof | grep LISTEN
I also specifically look for open connections;
# lsof | grep ESTABLISHED
# lsof | grep -e "TCP" -e "UDP"
