Did you try the GUI version of vim?
This'll make you feel better...

On my shiny new Mandriva install:
[craig at localhost ~]$ ldd /bin/vim|wc -l
14

[craig at localhost ~]$ ldd /usr/bin/gvim|wc -l
73

But then I'm both a gnome and a vim user. I'm sure you can compile gvim
without gnome libraries.
