$ hostname
scooter

$ cat /etc/hostname
scooter

$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1       localhost
127.0.1.1       scooter
... (ipv6 stuff follows)

(Yes, scooter is my hostname, and I don't know why localhost and scooter 
are on different lines in /etc/hosts).
