Which I don't have to do; again, unless there's features I need or bugfixes for
compile time options I've enabled, I've no reason to update.  Given the reduced
dependencies on libraries I'm not forced to upgrade other packages as a result
either.

Some of the programs, like Postgres, are great for scripting the build - I
can't remember the last time I had to substantially modify my build script
for a major Postgres release.

On the other hand, on the laptop I'm running Ubuntu, where every week[1] there
seems to be a libcairo regression, subjectively speaking.  I can't say objectively
- there doesn't seem to be any straightforward way to interrogate the update
process to determine much of anything, let alone any history of what it's
actually done; its interaction with people leaves a little to be desired.


[1]  I don't think this is Ubuntu's shortcoming.
