Whilst it is not Ubuntu, have you thought of loading Damn Small Linux:

  * http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

...onto a thumb drive and seeing if the store staff will allow you to 
boot the proposed laptop using a DSL image? If DSL goes too slow, then 
Ubuntu isn't likely to be any faster given that DSL specifically 
attempts to run on almost anything including resource starved devices.

You could take a CD of an Ubuntu Live in.
