help wth screen resolution

KDE or Gnome might tell you.  xdpyinfo tells you all the supported visuals and 
should list the active one.

Failing that:

sudo cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep Virtual

That shows me with an nvidia and intel driver.  I don't know if it will work 
with other drivers or not.
