Not making any comment on the good work and services AUUG has
done/offered in the past, but rather to address a couple of Richard's
statements.

Both OSIA (http://www.osia.net.au/) and Linux Australia are doing this
nowadays with good success - ref AUSFTA, ODF/OOXML etc.

IIRC it was the public liability insurance - Linux Australia also now
provides this routinely to whatever OSS affiliation/groups requests
it. Just mail ctte at linux.org.au and ask.
