I used "Beyond Linux From Scratch" as a starting point to build a custom
application stack of Java, Firefox, Heliwm, X.org and Linux for an
e-voting terminal project earlier this year.  It definitely saved me
some time and effort.

Yes, especially if you are comfortable compiling from source code.
