Linuxsa List

I return after years of silence. I hope you are all well.

First try with KMail on a new install, hope plain text is on...

Recent Linux adventures include attempting to configure a wireless LAN adapter
on a laptop. No joy, I've burned about 15 hours up and have just about given
up. Comments welcome.

System:
Belkin 54g wireless router, during setup set to broadcast SSID and to ignore
mac address filtering, security off, no WEP or other encryption.

Toshiba Satellite laptop with Suse Linux 10.3. Networking works OK using a
10/100 PCMCIA card connected by wire to the router, so I guess the basics of
networking are probably there. Can send/receive email and web browse using
wire.

D-Link DWL-G122 wireless LAN adapter (802.11g), seems to work on a Windoze
laptop connecting to the same router.

What I've tried:
Let Suse linux detect and set up using Yast.
Install and configure NDISWrapper as per the instructions on the NDISWrapper
website.

Problem:
NDISWrapper -i driver _seems_ to insert a driver. Plugging the adapter into a
USB port does not prompt NDISWrapper -l to show a device is attachwed.
Tail -f /var/log/messages during hotplug shows the device is seen by the
system and _something_ happens, just not any joy with NDISWrapper seeing the
device.
