Thanks to all who replied.

my immediate problems are taken care of, ie  I can do a scan, and 
viruses aren't all that important for my single computer that gets 
backed up fairly regularly.

For all the various exploring, finding, looking for, getting info stuff, 
I've run all the suggestions to see what they look like and surely will 
refer back to them lots of times in the future.
