In Brian's defence I have seen a full filesystem cause a daemon to
crash out in a groovy way that it wasn't cleaned up and I couldn't
unmount the filesystem even during the shutdown process; thus 
requiring fsck.  The filesystem wasn't damaged though, it was just
missing a clean bit.  It hasn't happened since I was on a 2.0.x 
kernel though.
