Spamassassin rules are tuned towards 5 points or higher for spam and I
would suggest you do likewise.
It depends on your rule set but there is no way I'd even consider 3.4
points on my system. With spamassasin set to 5 points for spam and using
several DNS black lists I'm blocking/deleting about 5000 spam a week to
my 3 email addresses. About 2 - 3 spam get through every day & less than
1 false hit a month.
If you're losing emails you should read up, check your emails to see
what rules are generating your false hits and tweak your rule sets. You
can set the score on any rule set to any value you want. Make sure any
critical stuff is white listed.
There is no reason to be losing emails
This is an example of 2 scores I have in my local cf file
score HTML_WEB_BUGS 3.906 2.050 0.996 1.016
score MARKETING_PARTNERS 3.015 2.569 2.238 5.2035
This is a simplistic overview of my setup
< 5 Good mail to inbox
5 - 10 send it to "Spam Inbox" - check it at least weekly for any good
mail
10 - 15 send it to "SPAM" - check it when bored (never found any good
email in here) Automatic cleaning every 14 days
> 15 If anyone sends me an email that scores over 15 I'm not interested
in reading it because it's got to be full of HTML mark up, web bugs and
a heap of other crap so 15 or higher is deleted by my sieve scripts.
