I found those (and similar) links prior to posting my help request onto
LinuxSA - though it took me a LOT longer than 2 seconds... :-)
The reason I still posted my request for assistance on to LinuxSA was
because none of the links you've suggested/provided (or that I
independently found in the 2ish hours I spent of googling prior to
posting) met my criteria of being able to have audible turn-by-turn
voice-instructions when using GPS navigation.
Voice instructions are something all the M$ Distro's have - and in
considering my requirements in a CarPuter, turn-by-turn voice
instructions are (to me) a necessity due to my being a 'road warrior'
constantly travelling to different metropolitan locations I've never
been to before.
After all, both eyes on the road/100% concentration is always better
than a 50/50 combination of dividing ones attention between an LCD
screen half way down the dash and the road whilst hurtling down a street
at anything between 25kph to 110Kph - PLUS. I mean, forget the speeding
fines and/or costs of smashing into someone's property (Those things can
be fixed/replaced) What *I'm* worried about is killing/maiming others
with a half tonne steel cage.
At any rate, I've followed your suggestions and contacted all of the
leads you supplied me with - but not having audible instructions that
enable me to keep my eyes on the road whilst navigating would (to me) be
an absolute deal breaker that would force me to stay in the M$ camp...
OBVIOUSLY I'd prefer not to do this so would very much appreciate any
assistance anyone can provide in guiding me to a FOSS O/S-Front End that
will allow voice navigation whilst using GPS.
Any/all assistance in sourcing this would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
DFW
