I have an IP4000 that I use over SMB (connected to a Windows box). I
can't use any of the advanced features (like duplex) but it's fine for
basic printing. I installed it using the canon bjfilter rpms, and
hand-made a couple of changes to the ppd file IIRC. If there's a
Windows box lying around, this might be an option.
