Novell Groupwise is a non-foss alternative and has the advantage of Linux 
clients. 

The advantage of these kind of tools is the interoperability against a 
common directory of users. Certainly not impossible to build alternatives 
with FOSS but when you can get one package, then its easier to maintain.
