More dual-booting fun than you can shake two HOWTOs at

I've noticed two interesting things while researching a solution for my
problem:
1. HOWTOs never exactly cover your situation
2. Most HOWTOs are years old and talk about things you can't do with the
software which have since been fixed
Now that I've got that out of the way...
Problem 1: Need/want POSIX environment in combination with W32 system,
think that cygwin is too bloated, and know that MSYS won't do it.
Solution 1: Install Linux system (SUSE 10.1) as dual boot.
Problem 2: Have 1 physical HDD & can't add another; don't want to create
any Linux partions more than / and swap; want to be able to share most
of C:\Documents and Settings\ so that I've got my documents,
Firefox/Thunderbird profiles, and whatever else; have heard that writing
directly to a FAT32 partition as /home can be bad and should mount it
underneath an ext3 path somehow; am not sure where to install a boot
loader without destroying the W32 install.
Solution 2: Ask nicely on this list?
