If its RedHat it should have up2date, if its a free derivative (Centos)
it should have yum. With a 2.6 kernel it must be _reasonably_ recent.
If you really have neither, install yum on it. It will be easier to
install yum and update nfs than it appears to be for you to update nfs
manually.
PS, apologies to all for HTML previous, just did a reply and forgot to
change to plain text.

Well, these don't work because (gulp) there is no working up2date OR yum
on the system. I have inherited this legacy build of generic 2.6 and
have tried to move the libraries and such forward but with limited tools
I have limited success. I have apt-get but it doesn't help much in this.
I tried to update nfs-utils and nfs-utils-libs but there are s many
dependencies that I can't weed through it all. I can't update glibc
which is first and foremost with no package manager.
So, the question is still, how can I patch nfs to make it work without a
tool to update packages, like yum or up2date?
Thanks!

Subject: Updating nfs
Hello folks,
I need to update the nfs-util-libs and nfs-utils on a RH 2.6.16 kernel
because nfs is failing to start properly. From threads I've seen I think
the update is the only way to fix it.
Does anyone know a quick and certain method to do this? I've been trying
to update the lib's and packages as I go to get nfs-utils and
nfs-utils-lib to install... but there are so many layers of dependacnies
that it's not worth fighting with.
I hope there is a good way to update nfs.
