So my question is, how will this effect the state of play with other
operating systems being put on dekstops being sold to users?

We've seen a poliferation of "linux" magazines in news agents with CDs
and DVDs on the cover touting "everything you need" ...

So will we see beige peecee shops put those OSes on dekstops as
alternatives?
