Here are simple step by step guides to doing it on eDirectory (LDAP),
eDirectory and OES (Open Enterprise Server) let you do all this with LUM
(Linux User Management) but you can do it the 'hard' way with the steps
shown in the links above.

If you use eDirectory instead of plain OpenLDAP (not including SAMBA
auth), you can actually replace your AD Domain with something easier to
manage, more stable and feature rich. Also unlike OpenLDAP you actually
have a standard manner with which to authenticate your Windows desktops
(and not having to use hacks like pGina).

You get so many options when you start to look at its capabilities. Same
management tools for both windows and Linux, same login scripts for
both, full replication, directory partitioning etc etc etc.
