how to get back removed files

It's very, very difficult to say the least, if not impossible. In 
general, Linux file systems aren't set up to allow easy undeletion.

If the files are worth a LOT OF money or effort:

  1. Take a bit by bit copy of the whole partition or disk the files were
     on

  2. Use the copy of the original to attempt to get the files back

It's probably not worth the effort.

By the way, your friend did have a backup, didn't she?
