Depending on what sort of data rates you're looking at, you could
do something like run PPP over RS422/485 using dual twisted pair
(e.g. 4 core telephone cable).  Your maximum speed would be whatever
you could crank out of your serial ports over a particular distance,
so you'd be looking at a maximum of 115K or 230K, but that's quicker
than your average dialup speed.
