Just following up to myself:  I suspect wireless may still be the
cheapest option.  You can get a couple of WiFi cards that support Ad-Hoc
mode, put them into a couple of old PCs running Linux and if necessary
replace the standard antennae with directional ones.  You don't need to
buy expensive WiFi routers.

There are also SDSL modems you can use over regular phone-grade wire,
and if you can live with the slow speed, there's always PPP over a
serial cable.
