cdrecord - burns at 16X at the most

Hmmm...


We're using Diamond Data IDE cd-burners that claim they can burn
anywhere up to 40 speed. We use Shintaro CDR's (but I've also used
Imation) and it only ever burns at 16 speed.

 cdrecord -dev=0,0,0 -v -speed=24 -data thing.iso

This is on Debian Woody...any ideas of why this might be happening?
