compiling the kernel

You have to cd to the directory containing the source, usually
/usr/src/linux.
Don't (please don't!) overwrite your existing kernel. Create a new
directory and put it there and use lilo (or the grubby grub if you nust)
to allow you to choose which kernel to boot from.
