RE: Dell PC needs Linux

I'm actually right in the middle of configuring FC1 on my Inspiron 8500.
It installed very cleanly indeed, although I had to add my own modelines
to the XF86Config file to drive the WUXGA screen properly, and ACPI
(power management) is not working. I'm looking for the best ways to fix
ACPI now. Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Brad.

the last dell machine i did it came with a normal winxp cd so i could
just: -partition with any linux boot cd (don't use windows fdisk!) -then
install winxp -then install linux with linux bootloader but my toshiba
laptop came with a modified winxp that had a ghost image
of winxp on it that writes over every partition on it (wiping out any
partitions i had done previously). but i got by this by installing
winxp with a script on the cd that only wrote to the first partition
(ie. doesn't write over any partition tables).
redhat/fedora has good laptop support... i use on my toshiba. but i
guess there would be quite a few other distros which do it quite well
too. but once you have partitions set up and windows installed you
should be able to install any distro of linux you want over the top.
regards dave
