Perhaps the problem is that the GPL isn't all pervasive. For instance, 
it seems like companies that release binaries make their money from 
selling the software, whereas GNU coders make money from maintaining and 
supporting it. As long as companies aren't willing to experiment with 
GNU software, it will limit the application of GNU software. It's a bit 
of a catch-22 I guess...

I don't agree with this. Everyone who makes a (voluntary) contribution 
to society has a vested interest, because they live in that society. Its 
like calling an environmentalist a hypocrite because they too need to 
breathe the air.
What GNU says is that you're free to do whatever you like, except 
restrict others' freedom...

why can't GIMP be written to allow binary plug-ins (like XFreeand 
NVidia)? If this was done, wouldn't this (discussion) be a non-issue?
