Heh,
The same communities who code the servers also code the desktop
experience. The desktop users won't code their own desktops because
they're not programmers. This doesn't make them "bad" - it just "is".
I'm not entirely certain whether desktop users threaten Linux's viability
as a server operating system however what a desktop user wants and a
server system administrator wants are sufficiently contrary to each other
as to create a need to compromise.
