Well, when I connected to his webserver, it asked me for a username and 
password (Which I didn't know).  I presume that if I had the correct values 
for these I would have been allowed in.

You should be able to just drop all the packets to the webserver from outside 
the thing.  I assume that having port 80 used by the hardware also prevents 
you forwarding port 80 to an internal machine?
