Trouble moving files

Over the weekend i tried to copy about 1500 files from a linux computer to a
windows98 computer. I tried to use windows networking (smb) to do this but
it would only copy about 150 or so files from the linux system before
stopping 'without' an error. 

The linux system is a laptop running redhat7.3 and gnome. 

Any ideas?
