dselect and aptitude are horses for courses in my opinion [never humble].
Once one gets used to using apt and dpkg (or apt and rpm) on the command
line though there's nothing like it.

BTW:

 The talk I'm giving is at the next AUUG meeting, held on the 2nd Wednesday
 of the month. I won't preempt Ben, AUUG's secretary in formally announcing
 it though ;-)
