You only have to use it to bring up linux once, and then fix it - in theory.

Once you have logged in as root you need to 
1. check that your /etc/lilo.conf file is looking as it should. 
2. make sure to run #lilo and pay attention to the output of lilo - it will
tell you what it has done.

then reboot the computer and remove the boot disk. should be cool from
there.
