Apt-get

Is is possible to see what packages are available for update once apt-get
update has been run ? I am still a bit green on command line apt having in
the past used the synaptic interface. I have had a browse through apt-cache
and tried a few things. It is nice to look at the list of available packages 
and choose what you wish to upgrade.
