cd // ??????

Can anyone enlighten me here,

I made a typo when changing directories and acciedently typed 'cd //'
to my supprise the bash prompt changed to // but when doing an 'ls' it
displays the contents of '/'

This happens on both my Linux boxen so I'm assuming it's supposed to do
that.
Any comments on why or what its for?
I can't find anything on the net as searching for "cd //" or alike on
the net yields
usless results because of the contents of the query.
