Expensive burners produce 'better' quality discs. If an exact copy of a
master CDR is to be produced then this CDR must be as perfect as possible.
Errors in the ECC data area are real killers as this data is copied straight
across and used to correct errors in the actual files stored on the disc.
It's also the reason that if you copy a Mode2/raw disc enough times
(multiple generations) it will eventually become unreadable (this is not the
case for Mode1 discs, where the ECC data is recreated by the burning drive
at every burn, hence no generational degradation).
Plextor drives are renowned for low error rates, exact pit lengths, low
jitter rate etc. The only cuious thing is the Sony CDU series being listed
along with a Plexmaster (very expensive drive). The CDUs were cheapish
consumer prices drives.
The CDUs are quite old so I'm curious as to why they are still recommended.
All CDRW drives tend to age (I've had a Yamaha and Ricoh slowly die after 18
months of light usage).
