Asset Manager ?

Hello all. I hope you are enjoying all the public holidays as much as I am
:)
Recently a need has arisen at work to introduce an asset management system
to track 300+ networked workstations. I am armed with a good computer,
portable barcode scanner and lots of motivation. My idea is to ID every
piece of equipment that is purchased and track it until it is
decommissioned.

I am wondering what you may suggest as a possible software solution (linux
prefferably or windows) for this project, or other successful
implementations you know of.
