... which would defeat the purpose of my efforts at learning emacs...
BTW: thanks to Mikey Neuling, a solution was found -- TERM=putty (putty
cleverly sets the term to xterm...) ... still, the emacs latex-mode
doesn't seem to correctly parse the latex commands that are specific to
latex's letter class, like /opening{} and so on ...
