Knoppix on HD

Knoppix is a standalone CD version of Debian (but you knew that <g>).
I want to put Knoppix on my sister-in-law's HD - it is only 3G, 2G of
which are needed for another OS and associated files.
However, 1G is plenty of room for the contents of a CD - right?
Well yes - but no! :-(
There are instructions how to put Knoppix on a HD, but the listed method
unpacks much of the compressed Knoppix files so it needs 2G+ of space. :-(
So...
I have copied all the CD files onto that 1G partition, but of course it
won't boot from there.
Q. How could I prepare a boot disk which would find Knoppix on that
second partition and boot up?

TIA.
