KDE text select + click => annoying menu

After suffering with this for a couple of months, and
searching documentation and trying various experiments with
various parameters, I really do have to ask for some help on this.

Problem:
I'm using what appears to be KDE version 3.0.3 on SuSE 8.1.
(I haven't got around to dumping SuSE for Gentoo yet. Too busy.)
First I select some text with the left button in a window such as an xterm.
Then I click in the window with the left mouse button.
Then an annoying menu comes up saying "Web-URL: ..." with a heap
of options for doing things with what I've selectd.
This happens about 20 times and hour at least while I'm doing some
software development work because I'm continually copy/pasting stuff.

Can anyone tell me how to turn this wretched thing thing off?
It's more annoying than the infamous paper clip. Well almost...
(My experience with the paper clip has only been to see other people suffering with
it and screaming and yelling. Good thing I didn't "upgrade" my wind95 machine.)
Do I need to get a new version of KDE, or is there a customization to turn it off?

CHeers,
Alan Kennington.
