unfortunately it seems to require patching mgetty.

Assuming you don't care about security and that single user mode is ok 
(untried): Maybe booting into single user mode with a passwordless root 
will work, but maybe you will still need to hit enter...

I think Knoppix may do it also, when you boot in console only mode - it 
definately does for KDE mode. So you could se how it manages it if you 
have access to a copy.
