Modem trouble

Im using an internal modem on my laptop (yes winmodem) sis chipset. Suse 8.1. The modem has been working (same laptop and distro) but lately i can hear the modem kick in, i get dial tone but the laptop never actually dials. I have check "Wait for dial tone..." and tried that off and on. The modem test works. Any ideas?
