  Thanks to all those people who answered my question. I've made a note of all the suggestions. I have to do a fresh install as I don't have Linux on a computer with  a USB port which is needed  by the modem.

Try redhat! As root, just type adsl-setup, and it should setup your
modem and account information easily. Other distro's may have similar or
even the same tool. But imho redhat is one of the most newbie friendly
distro's available.
