error: corrupted MAC on input

Does the error (during a ssh session):

Received disconnect from 192.168.1.2: 2: Corrupted MAC on input.

reflect a fixable hardware issue (other than replacing the network card),
a software issue, or something else?

I've looked around, but can find no authoritative description of the
situation.

any help?
