Calculations

I need to calculate areas in an image. The area is either at the same
colour with similar intensity or I can find edges using gimp and then the
area is inside the edges. The software should allow for adjusting
thresholds of sensitivity.
Does anybody know of open license software capable of calculating such
image areas?
