Please forgive me if this seems like a silly suggestion, but I couldn't get
2.4.18-18.7 to compile either, that is until I did a "make mrproper" before
I took any further steps. I have to do this every time I recompile the
kernel, otherwise the compile fails with loads of errors. It means backing
up the .config file each time before you run "make mrproper", otherwise
you'll loose your current config.
I hope that helps.. now that I discovered that trick I don't have too many
dramas building new kernels.
