LCD monitors are designed to work at a specific resolution. Running
them at a lower resolution causes them to employ a work-around, namely
stretching the pixels to make them fit the width of the screen.
The other common work-around is to shrink the screen size, which is
why you sometimes see a black border around the outside of the
picture.
