Dvd Region Setting under Linux
Recent experience with Region Setting a DVD drive under Linux
Current DVD firmware allows 5 changes to be made to the region setting or your
dvd drive. While there is an abundance of Windows tools to hack dvd firmware
or change the region setting, stuff for Linux is harder to come by.
This worked ok for me - your mileage may vary. Hardware being
interrogated was a Pioneer DCR-111 CD-RW/DVD combo
Download this file to your home directory.
http://www.linuxtv.org/download/dvd/dvd_disc_20000215.tar.gz
The Mplayer site provided a link for this. Thanks to Mplayer.
Become root and untar
tar -zxvf dvd_disc_20000215.tar.gz
cd to the directory it created -
cd dvd_disc_20000215.tar.gz
You will see a number of files. While in the directory just type make.
This will configure some new files. One will be regionset.
Run regionset with the dvd device as a parameter eg /dev/dvd or
/dev/sr0.
./regionset /dev/dvd
You will get some output similar to this.
suse:/home/blackbird/dvd_disc_20000215 # ./regionset /dev/dvd
Current Region Code settings:
RPC Phase: II
type: SET
vendor resets available: 4
user controlled changes resets available: 4
drive plays discs from region(s): 4, mask=0xF7
Would you like to change the region setting of your drive? [y/n]:n
suse:/home/blackbird/dvd_disc_20000215 #
The Pioneer DCR-111 required a dvd to be loaded in order for it to
work.
You may proceed to change the region or keep the setting as it is.
