Disk Id

Anyone know if you can get the disk id / model # of a disk from Linux userland?

hdparm -[Ii] gives something, but you need root.

I'm looking for a non-root, non-kernel interface - a binary or /proc will be
fine[1]

TIA,

[1] /var/log/[messages/dmesg] sometimes has it, but not necessarily.
