Yes, this is the problem with smbfs as it stands. Steve French of IBM is
writing a UNIX client that will allow UIDs and GIDs to be communicated to
the server, thus preserving the correct ownership.
However, that client is still under development, and NFS is the better
way to do this stuff for UNIX to UNIX (Linux to Linux) systems.
