Paying Microsoft money isn't very palatable, but the rumour is that
they're losing ~$100 on every box sold to compete with the PS2, and
making it back on games, licencing and a future online gaming service.

So if you buy one and put linux on it, you get a 700mhz system with a
neat tv-out interface and dvd player, and MS loses money :)

The biggest downside to linux-on-xbox is that it only has 64Mb of ram,
and even that's shared with the graphics card. Also, if you share your
home with less faithful linux users, there's always the risk that
they'll go out and rent or buy xbox games anyway ..
