Have you tried another web browser ?  That should narrow down the problem
to either Netscrape or X.   If it is Netscrape then switch, if it is X well
that is another kettle of fish.   Since you have tried fvwm2 and KDE it
sort of points towards Netscrape but you cant be sure.
